Hope you are enjoying the lovely sunshine; long may it continue!
We had a great meeting at the beginning of the month with Learning Disability Wales, as we are going to be speaking at their Conferences in November, in both North and South Wales. The title of the conference is Love Your Health and the focus will be on the health and well-being of people with a learning disability. We spoke at one of their conferences back in 2017 so it will be great to share how our work has progressed in the six years since then! If you go on their website ldw.org.uk you can find further information, if you wish to attend.
Later in the week we had our second trustee meeting where we shared our plans for the future and discussed our current challenges regarding funding. As we have mentioned before our focus is on education, through sharing Paul’s story with the Universities and also, working with people with a learning disability, their families and carers to empower them through sharing all the support that is available. We are also looking at some work on annual health checks as the uptake of them is not great, even though a quality annual health check really can make all the difference. Watch this space!
We met again with Welsh Government and Improvement Cymru to discuss amongst other things, the end of year figures for the Paul Ridd Learning Disability Awareness Training. There is grave concern at the very low figures of some of the health boards which is deeply disappointing. The feedback from those who have completed the training is overwhelmingly positive and people say that it has made a difference to their practice, so this just encourages us to keep on going, holding these health boards to account!
We have been arranging some dates for training at several of the Universities over the next few months with six dates in the diary so far. We feel it is such a privilege to speak about Paul and share his story as we know the impact that hearing it can have on the working practice of healthcare professionals. This is his legacy. We are also looking forward to Learning Disability Awareness Week 19-25 June as we will be visiting UHW in Cardiff alongside the liaison team and later in the week speaking with Champions in Hywel Dda.
