Hope you had a good Easter!
We were delighted to be invited to speak this month to a group of Occupational Therapists who work both in the community and within hospitals, as they wanted to know how they can better support people with a learning disability. It was a privilege to share Paul’s Story with them and to share all of the resources and contacts that are available that can help them to improve their service. Everyone at the talk had completed the Paul Ridd mandatory Leaning Disability Awareness Training which is so encouraging for us to hear!
Wonderful news mid-month to hear that the Acute Learning Disability Nursing post at Morriston Hospital, Swansea has been filled and the new nurse, Amy has started! This was after a 9 month gap when Kara (who was amazing!) left, and the vacancy was slow to be advertised then filled. A huge thank you to Helen and Sharon for all your hard work covering all three hospitals in Swansea Bay UHB during this time, we are so grateful!
One of our next potential projects (funding permitting!) that we have mentioned before is to raise the profile and promote the uptake of QUALITY Annual Health Checks. We see this as a two strand project as we need to engage with both GPs and also people with a learning disability and their families, carers. We had a great meeting with Dr Maria Vincent, a really inspirational GP who is helping us organise our ideas! We would really appreciate hearing from you, if you have a learning disability or if you care for someone with a learning disability, about your ideas and also your experiences of receiving an AHC, but also if you think that the AHC should be made mandatory in Wales? Please email us to let us know. (info@paulriddfoundation.org)
We were delighted to hear this month that we have received the two grants that we recently applied for! One, from the Yapp Charitable Trust is a contribution towards running costs, and the second, through Improvement Cymru/Welsh Government is to work to improve the uptake of the Paul Ridd Learning Disability Awareness Training and the Once for Wales Health Profile within the NHS. We are really looking forward to starting this project! We are very grateful to both organisations for supporting us.
