At the start of the month, we were invited to join the acute learning disability liaison nurses, from every health board in Wales, at Improvement Cymru’s offices, for a Learning Disability Champion Training workshop. It was a really great day, sharing lots of ideas, and good practice, to update and streamline the training for Champions. I left feeling so inspired after spending time with these amazing nurses, who do such wonderful work, improving the hospital experience for people with a learning disability.
The next day we were back up to Cardiff University to share Paul’s Story with over 100 third year nursing students. We received some amazing feedback from them which gives us such confidence that they really have taken onboard the lessons from Paul’s tragic story. So many times, the words “compassion, really listen, advocate for the patient, see the person not the disability” are used, which is such a positive thing for us to hear. It is also a joy to see every hand in the room go up when we ask if they have completed the mandatory Paul Ridd Learning Disability Awareness Training!
Mid-month the Health Profile Promotion tour continued in Hywel Dda Health Board, at Prince Phillip hospital in Llanelli. We joined with Beth from Improvement Cymru, Shannon and Lisa from the acute liaison team, and James, one of the Health Check Champions. We had a great time, engaging with lots of healthcare professionals, sharing awareness of this vital tool, and also sharing information about the excellent liaison service. Thank you so much for such a positive day!
We were delighted also to link up with the principal lecturer on the undergraduate nursing programme for Wrexham University and thrilled to share that we will be speaking with their students over the next few months. We have also been contacted by the programme director at Cardiff Met University to share Paul’s Story with their students on the allied health professional undergraduate degree programmes, and we will start sharing Paul’s Story with them next year. We are so happy to be able to reach students in universities where previously we had no links, so thank you so much to everyone for getting in touch with us!
Mencap are carrying out their first national survey on public transport. It was co-produced with people with a learning disability and asks questions about things that are important to them, including how public transport barriers impact on people’s wellbeing, access to community and access to paid work. They want to hear from people with a learning disability, so if you do not have a learning disability please share with everyone you know. Also, people who fill in the survey will get the chance to enter a prize draw, where four people will win a £40 voucher! Please follow the link to get involved:

Finally, we went to Aberystwyth University to share Paul’s Story with this year’s cohort of adult and mental health nursing students. We were delighted to be joined by learning disability liaison nurses from the primary and acute team from Hywel Dda UHB, who also shared the amazing work that they do. We are always so grateful to be given the opportunity to speak with students at the start of their career, as we know that hearing a patient story really can make all the difference.
