Not sure how it is the start of December this weekend, or where this month has gone, but it has been a busy one as usual!

We had the privilege of sharing Paul’s Story at the beginning of the month at the University of South Wales with over 250 first year students, from all genres of nursing.  We received some amazing feedback and one of the words that was repeated many times over was “listen”, especially listening to the patient but also to their families and carers who one student said, “are the professionals in this case”.  Wonderful stuff to read!

One great meeting we had this month was with the NHS Wales National Safeguarding Service, who have invited us to talk at an event they are organising in North Wales next year on the topic of adults at risk.   We were delighted to be asked and really looking forward to raising awareness of the work that we do with a new audience.  Every time we share Paul’s Story and his legacy, we know that it is making a difference.

During the coldest spell of the year so far, we continued our Health Profile promotion at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Pontyclun.  We were joined by Beth from Improvement Cymru, Siobhan, Judith and Jo from the learning disability liaison team, and Pauline, Tom, Claire and Lynne from Cwm Taf People First. We had some good chats with staff and shared awareness of the profile, and we are so grateful to everyone for supporting us!  We have 2 more events to go, in Powys at the beginning of December, and Cardiff & Vale in the New Year.  We are delighted that we will have then covered every health board in Wales!  If you need a copy of the Health Profile then do scan the QR code below.

We returned to Swansea University at the end of the month, to share Paul’s Story with first year adult nursing students, which as always was a great privilege, thank you for inviting us!  Again, the feedback we have received is amazing, stressing the importance of “communication” as a vital component of care for people with a learning disability.  When students at the start of their professional careers say that they will advocate for patients with a learning disability, it makes us very happy indeed.  In total in 2024 we have spoken to over 1,200 students which we are thrilled about, but this is a figure we hope to surpass next year!
