Many apologies for the huge delay in sending out our January update, but better late than never!

We had a great start to the new year with meetings to talk about the next tier of the Paul Ridd Learning Disability Awareness Training. This is called the “enhanced” level and it is for healthcare staff whose role will bring them into regular contact with people with a learning disability. We are excited to see this when it comes out as we are sure it will make a real difference to people.

We also are continuing our discussions with Improvement Cymru to carry out some work together to raise awareness of the Health Profile amongst people with a learning disability, their families and carers, and also with NHS staff too. We will also work with them to continue to raise awareness of the Paul Ridd mandatory training within the NHS.  We look forward to sharing more about this with you soon.

The main presentation that we share with health care students in Wales is Paul’s Story and we are really happy to be updating this with the help of Paul Harris who we mentioned to you in our October update.  Paul’s enthusiasm and his commitment to ensuring equality of healthcare for people with a learning disability is wonderful and we are grateful to him for giving up his time to help us. We look forward to sharing further news with you soon.

Also in January we marked the 15th anniversary of Paul’s avoidable death in 2009.  It was a day of reflection for us, thinking about what we have achieved as a Foundation in his name but also realising that there is still a long way to go until equal healthcare for people with a learning disability is embedded within the NHS in Wales.  We will continue to campaign in Paul’s name.

At our quarterly trustee meeting we discussed our many projects and ideas for the new year and we are delighted to be starting with one that will shine a light on the importance of the annual health check.  We are lucky to have Dr Dawn Cavanagh sharing her expertise with us on this subject!
