Causes of Learning Disability
Something affecting the development of the brain which may occur before birth (prenatally), during birth or in early childhood. They can be caused by any one of a variety of factors, or by a combination. The specific cause is not always known.

Complications during birth resulting in lack of oxygen to the brain.
Debilitating illness/injury during childhood, affecting brain development e.g. road traffic accident.
A very premature birth.
Chromosome abnormalities such as Down's Syndrom or Turner Syndrom.
Contact with damaging material (e.g. radiation).
Neglect and/or lack of mental stimulation in early life.
Consumption of alcohol during pregnancy, e.g. Foetal Alcohol Syndrome
An inherited condition passed on from parents’ genes e.g. Fragile X
Mothers illness during pregnancy.
